Advanced Technical Writing
Learn to Plan, write and design business/technical
documents, and create a proposal.
Our Advanced Technical Writing Course will give you
the expertise and confidence to market yourself as a technical writer or simply
to tackle more advanced assignments at work.
This Course builds on the skills you have acquired in the
previous technical writing courses through emphasizing audience analysis,
document organization and design, supplements, visuals, and research techniques.
It also trains you to write a full-fledged proposal that will incorporate all
stages of technical writing: planning, writing, designing, and revising.
Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
1. Analyze readers and/or situations to prepare for writing
a proposal.
2. Define the purpose of a proposal.
3. Gather, record, and interpret data.
4. Use content, design, and style guidelines to produce a more readable, concise
document.
5. Write and edit technical documentation.
6. Write a winning proposal.
You will demonstrate your understanding of advanced
technical writing by creating a proposal which will include research,
supplemental materials, and graphics. This will be submitted in stages for
assessment and feedback. Your mastery of advanced technical writing is complete
when you achieving at least 80% on the final proposal.
Week 1 :
Proposals--types, purposes, audiences
Students will examine various types of proposals to see how each fits a specific
purpose and audience.
Week 2 :
Research
Students will learn about primary and secondary forms of research and how to
research a proposal.
Week 3 :
Visuals--use of graphics
How to design and incorporate various graphics into a technical document.
Week 4 :
Supplements--front matter
Preparing the letter of transmittal, abstract, table of contents, list of
graphics.
Week 5 :
Supplements--back matter
Preparing the bibiography, appendix, index.
Week 6 :
Proposal Due

Biography:
Vickie Hodges has extensive experience as a technical writer,
editor, and instructor. She is currently a full-time faculty member at San
Jacinto College in Houston , Texas , where she teaches technical writing along
with other English courses. She also writes and coordinates grants and contracts
for the college.
